ShotDialed

How we test

Repeatable variables before confident verdicts.

Every recommendation on ShotDialed separates direct use, cited manufacturer data, third-party references, and editorial judgment. The method exposes what actually changes flavor, workflow, maintenance, and value at home — not in a lab.

The same water. The same baseline beans. The same preheat routine. One variable changes at a time, and the result gets written down before the next shot pulls.

Six categories

What we measure and why it matters at home.

Setup Same water hardness, same baseline beans, known grinder dialed in before testing. Machine preheated to the manufacturer spec. First shot discarded.
Shot stability Time to first usable shot from cold start. Back-to-back temperature recovery. Pressure consistency measured by taste, time, and weight — not just a portafilter gauge.
Steam Milk texture from cold to ~60 °C. Wand power, tip design, recovery time after steaming, and how easy cleanup is during a real morning routine.
Workflow Counter footprint, controls, water refill interruptions, basket and portafilter ergonomics, purge routine, and honest daily friction over a two-week period.
Maintenance Scale risk given local water hardness, backflush access, cleaning port design, gasket and basket availability, and realistic long-term annoyance for a home user.
Value What the price buys versus the next tier down and the next tier up. Includes the full cost: machine, grinder minimum, accessories, and first-year maintenance.

Independence

Affiliate potential does not decide verdicts.

When affiliate links are added in the future, they will be disclosed on the relevant pages. Claims that can be verified are cited to their source. Direct-use observations and editorial judgments are labeled by context — never presented as manufacturer facts.

The standard we hold ourselves to

If a machine failed in our hands, we say so. If a price drop changes the value equation, we update the verdict. If a reader finds a factual error and provides a better source, we fix the guide, note the correction, and update the date. The goal is to be the most honest resource a home-espresso buyer can find.
